04 Jul 09 10 Tips for a Better Sleep

Nothing can replace the power of a good night sleep in healing ourselves. A good night sleep not only rejuvenates our senses but it also helps us in solving many complex problems. Hold your judgment on this statement for a while, because in this article, I am not going to contest the merits of a good night sleep, but I am going to share some valuable tips that will help you relax and make your night sleep better.

  1. Fix a time to go to bed, and always follow this schedule, come hell or high water.
  2. Do not take your worries to your bed with you. Learn to deal with your problems in the evening, so that, you can relax on the bed. Your bed is not the place to ponder over business issues, it’s a place to relax and refuel yourself.
  3. Maintain a sleep routine. Never hit bed at irregular hours. Go in the bed and come out of it at approximately same time, everyday.
  4. Get a good supportive mattress. An uncomfortable mattress is not capable of giving you any comfort.
  5. Make a sleep ritual and follow it. Do the same thing every day before going to bed, and in time your body will learn how you operate. Once you start watching 9pm news (if you have included it in your sleep ritual), your body will get signal that soon you are going to sleep, and it will prepare itself accordingly.
  6. Cut down the consumption of tea, coffee or any other type of stimulant.
  7. Smoking does not give you lung cancer only, but it also gives you disturbed sleep.
  8. Exercise regularly, but not before the bedtime. Exercising regularly will keep you fit, and will help you in dealing with daily tension.
  9. Say no to late night television. It can take toll on your body as well as mind. Occasional viewing is all right, if you are addicted to late night television programs. I will suggest using DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) to record your favorite late-night shows, which you can watch next day in your leisure.
  10. Sleep in a cool and dark place. Never make the ambience of your bedroom loud, it will hamper your sleep.
