29 May 09 Eat Healthy On The Run

If you have a job where you have to travel a lot, you’ll find that eating healthy on the go can be extremely difficult, as it seems that you just don’t have the time to make healthy choices when you’re very busy.  But that’s not true, as long as you remember a few guiding factors you can be eating much healthier without having to put forth that much effort.

First off you want to be careful about any fast food salads, as they usually contain more calories than the burgers and fries.   Most fast food salads are loaded with fatty dressing, or greasy chicken, both of which completely ruin the point of trying to eat healthier by getting a salad in the first place.  You want to opt for salads with non-fat dressing, and if you’re getting chicken, you want to go grilled, as grilled has much, much less saturated fat than deep fried.  And if you have the option for a fruit salad, always go with that, as they are usually the healthiest.

Also make sure that you’re getting balanced meals, you want plenty of lean protein from sources like fish, chicken or beans, but you want to make sure you’re also getting enough servings of fruits and vegetables.  Go for whole grains whenever possible with bread, instead of the empty calories and carbohydrates found in white breads, and always choose water, as most fast food places only offer juices that are high in sugar and low in nutrition, or soda which is 100% junk food.

Beyond that you just want to do portion control.  Don’t get the large sized meal, as they will always contain more calories than you’ll ever want in maintaining a healthy diet.  The way most restaurants are designed now, the small portion size is actually about the size that you should be consuming in the first place.  Remember the average human body only needs 2,000 calories a day, and that adds up ridiculously fast when we’re talking about eating from fast food places.
