26 Aug 09 Buying A Guitar For Beginners

Playing a musical instrument is a great hobby to have, especially when it’s something fairly simple like guitar.  Guitar is an instrument that’s fairly easy to pick up, but difficult to master.  But the versatility of the instrument in terms of sound and ease of transport, is almost unparalleled.  So seeing as you’ve decided that playing guitar is going to be a new hobby of yours, how do you go about buying your first one is probably the biggest question.  The world of guitar shopping is a complex place that can be incredibly confusing to a first timer, unless you know where to look, and what to look for.

Firstly, don’t be swayed by the big name brands, as they may be the most popular models, but usually they’re also the most expensively priced.  Your Ibanez’s or Fender’s more unpopular models are no match for a cheaper independent manufacturer’s guitar most of the time.

But, keeping in mind you want to be prepared to shell out a decent amount of money to make sure you get a quality guitar.  That money pays off in the long run, and you may as well have the best sound possible for your money.  Stay away from guitars under $100, because they usually carry a concealed flaw, or are of a very low quality.  You want to be prepared to spend $2-300 on your first guitar.

Check your instrument up and down, look for obvious flaws, such as chips or scratches in the body work.  Or just a shoddy paint job itself on the body of your potential guitar, and stay away from these, as little problems that present themselves in this way, could be a sign that there are greater problems within.

Make sure the neck of your potential guitar is perfectly straight.  Now you don’t have to be a guitar expert to be able to really judge, just pick the guitar up and look down the neck and make sure it appears absolutely straight.  Any bowing whatsoever is a big no no, and a clear sign you should stay away.

Measure tone and action as best as you can.  This means you want to pluck a string on the guitar and listen to the note clearly, in a good guitar the note will ring on consistently for a short period of time, whereas lower quality instruments don’t hold sound for very long.  And the word ‘action’ refers to the distance that the strings are pulled up above the fret board.  While as a beginner you can’t judge what the appropriate distance should be, if the strings look awfully far away from the fret board, stay away.

Finally, just make sure to play the guitar for a while before you make a final decision.  You’re a beginner so you’re not supposed to be able to play anything remarkable, so don’t be afraid to jam on your potential new instrument a little bit.  Find one that feels comfortable, as each guitar is designed to suit a different personal preference, in terms of feel.  Find the right one for you by letting your body make the decision for you.  A natural fitting guitar will make learning infinitely easier.

08 Aug 09 Keep Your Personal And Professional Lives Seperate

One of the keys to being successful at work is remaining stress free.  One of the keys to staying stress free is being able to relax, and a good way of being able to relax at work, is knowing how to separate your work life from your home life.  Too often, especially in the corporate world, your personal life can be completely devoured by your professional life, becoming a never ending battle that can leave you incredibly stressed, and underperforming in both halves of your existence.  Knowing how to wind down and keep the office located strictly in the office is one of the most important tenants in life.

What you need to do first is define your personal life in general.  Everyone is going to have a different opinion on what work means to them.  If you find yourself more career oriented, in which climbing the business ladder and increasing your salary are the most important things to you, then you’ll have to account for having less personal life in favor of more time to work.  Whereas just making a comfortable amount of money that allows you to pursue your interests is more the style where your personal life needs to be protected from your professional.

Make daily lists of what you’ve completed and what you haven’t completed at work that day.  This way you can target the problems that you’ll need to work through the next day, thereby getting them out of your way so that you don’t have to be forced to think about those problems long after you leave work.  Organizing yourself will allow you to leave your plan for working through your job related problems at work, so that you don’t need to be considering those things long after you’ve left the office.

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t have time to complete a project.  If you’re more personal life oriented, don’t feel guilty if there are times you could stay later at work to complete something, but you’d rather be spending time with your family.  As long as it’s not something that affects your job performance on the whole, it’s okay to put something on hold in favor of your personal life, and you shouldn’t feel guilty just because you want to pursue your own interests over your work interests.

Finally, just make sure you always make time for your private life.  Some days you can lose yourself in your job, counteract this by putting in time on you daily calendar for yourself.  Whether it’s seeing a movie you’ve been waiting for after work, or going on a date, or just spending time with your family, mark it off on your calendar so that you’re aware of what you want to be doing.  Always make time for yourself, because work isn’t everything in life, and even if you need to mark that on your calendar, just don’t forget the fact.

03 Jul 09 Get Yourself Out Of Debt

Part of the reason we’re in such a bad economic recession is the mounting debt that most of the population carries.  So there’s a good chance that you, yourself are also in debt to some degree.  One of the biggest problems that comes with that debt is trying to find a way out, as debt is a constant battle that you could end up fighting for most of your life.  In fact most people don’t necessarily even know where to turn when faced with mounting bills, as wading deep into the waters of debt can feel insurmountable, to the point where you fear you’ll never be able to overcome the seemingly never ending pile up of interest rates and penalty fees.

But there are plenty of things you can do, such as debt consolidation to gain a little breathing room and make some headway on that mounting debt.  The first and most tried and true strategy to put into action, is consolidating any of your credit debt that may be spread out over multiple cards onto one card with the lowest interest rate available.  This way you stop your cards with higher interest rates from building up more cash that you’ll have to pay back later, and you have the opportunity to really eat into that debt.

Another quick fix is a home equity loan, if you own your own house.  This is a quick loan you can take out from your bank in which the collateral is your house.  So you’ll be able to get a good amount of money quickly, and usually home equity loans don’t have to be paid back as quickly as credit card bills, and the interest rates tend to be lower.  Not to mention the fact that there are all manner of tax deductions available for interest built up from home equity loans.

If those fail, there’s always a credit counseling agency.  They will work with the agency’s collecting your debts to consolidate the payments and reduce your interest rate to the lowest possible amount, making your debt free life reclamation much, much easier.
