05 Dec 09 Go Green This Holiday

Going green is a good idea for any time of year, but especially during the holidays.  When we are buying and wrapping presents, most of us have little thought for the environment.  Or many of us believe that there really isn’t a way around the traditions, that would also be healthier for mother nature.  But in reality, it’s easy to go green for the season, it just requires a little more thought on your part.

For example, all the holiday cards that you send out this year, to family and friends, can amount to a lot of trash.  But by purchasing recycled cards, you cut down on the amount of new material being produced.  And with a little luck, everyone will be inspired to recycle again when they receive the cards.  Therefore really cutting down on that holiday carbon footprint.

When gift shopping try to shop locally as often as possible.  This means staying clear of the big chains, and finding items at your local stores.  This will cut down on the fuel expended on shipping items across the country, like bigger chain stores practice.  That’s less fuel lost, and less harmful emissions sprayed into the air.  Plus buying locally is better for your community’s economy, and that’s a huge positive for everyone.

If you’re planning on decorating with lights, try to stick with LED lights.  LED lights still look great, and conserve energy when in use.  Also you can try and limit the amount of time that your lights are on, which will also conserve energy.  Plus the energy you save will also save you money, and nobody would argue with that.

Finally, if you’re really looking for a way to be eco-friendly and want to do the most you can, try using a live tree this year.  Instead of cutting down a tree, or buying from a lot where the tree is cut down, instead transplant a live tree.  You’ll have to buy a few items for set up, but it’s definitely worth your time.  You’ll want to take the tree out of the ground about a week before Christmas, and then put the tree back outside promptly afterward.  Then you’ll have a live reusable tree for many years, saving you money, and saving a tree.

31 Oct 09 Extending The Life Of Your Car

Part of saving money is making better use of what you have.  One of the best ways to do that is to prolong the life of your automobile.  By making your car last for as long as possible, in great condition, you prolong the amount of time before you have to buy a new vehicle.  This way you’re helping the environment by not discarding a car every few years, and maintaining the vehicle you have so that you don’t emit more harmful fumes than necessary.

The first key to keeping your car fit to run for years and years is finding a good mechanic.  Search for a mechanic you can trust, that also charges fair prices.  Someone you feel comfortable with, and that you can trust to do a good job, not just try to sell you more things you don’t need.  Ask around your community, turn to friends and relatives to get their opinions.  If you don’t know much about car maintenance yourself, do a little research around to guarantee you don’t get taken for a ride yourself.

Read your car’s owner’s manual, so that you can be up on the standard of care needed for that automobile.  Keep up on your oil changes, about every three months, and don’t buy the cheap stuff.  Try to use the type of oil recommended in your owner’s manual, to ensure maximum engine efficiency.

Finally, make sure your car is always clean.  That means regularly washing your car, and keeping the inside clean.  This way you avoid any little problems that a buildup of grime could cause, and you keep the whole vehicle running as smoothly as possible.  The better you maintain your car, the longer it will last.  Take good care of your car to ensure you get a long full life out of that vehicle, and to ensure you don’t encounter any preventable problems down the road.

08 Aug 09 Stop Feeling Tired

Tiredness is a battle that a lot of us face, whether at work or in your personal life, and it can have some very negative effects.  Being tired essentially ruins your ability to stay motivated, or to think up new ideas or concepts, or even to be creative enough to keep positive energy going in every aspect of your life.  But there most definitely are many things you can do to combat that tiredness before you really see a negative consequence.

Consider removing the typical wake up drugs that people turn to when feeling tired.  Sugar and caffeine is exactly what I’m talking about.  Both are horrible to use when you feel tired, as it provides for unnatural energy that your body will use up in a short amount of time, giving you a short energy boost, and then leaving you feeling more deflated than before.  By getting your body dependant on these actually makes you feel more tired than you normally would, when they aren’t present in  your system.

Instead focus on something more natural for your body.  Like aerobic exercise.  Something good and intense, like jogging or bike riding.  Both improve your physical condition, strengthening your body so that your muscles and metabolism both work more effectively.  That will increase the amount of energy you can put out, fighting off that tired feeling, and helping you function much more effectively.

Sleep is another vitally important element of being healthy and not feeling tired.  Not getting your 8 hours every night has very negative effects on your body.  Your ability to concentrate will be severely compromised, and your body will not feel fully recharged, leaving your muscles tense with a feeling like they’re just out of gas.  You have to get your sleep so that your body can fully recharge itself, letting yourself rest so that you can wake up anew, strong and read to take on the day.
