20 Jan 10 Increase Your Memory Brain Power

Have you ever forgotten where something is, and then spent an hour hopelessly searching for the item, without being able to remember where you put it?  That’s a problem everybody goes through once or twice.  Have you ever thought about increasing your memory power so that doesn’t happen anymore?

There are several benefits to improving memory.  You’ll increase your brain power overall.  Plus giving your memory a workout fairly often, at as early an age as possible, is a great way to fight against memory problems that come with age.  The best way to do that is to get your sleep.

Medical professionals always stress how important getting at least 7-8 hours sleep a night really is, and that fact can’t be overstated.  Lack of sleep causes and inflames all manner of health problems, including problems in your brain.  One of those issues, is memory.  Not getting enough sleep increases the likelihood that you could develop memory problems.

Eat plenty of brain health foods to provide the opportunity for your brain to function at it’s peak effectiveness.  Fish like Salmon are extremely good for you because of the beneficial Omega-3s that help your brain and cardiovascular system.  The same principle is true for berries such as blueberries and acai.  Both also contain natural healthy Omega-3s.

Play a few brain specific puzzles a few times a week to increase your brain power.  Things like crosswords, or even a game like Scrabble.  Something that forces you to think, and learn new facts or words as you play, to flex your brain power.  Also reading is a big help, as reading requires a lot more brain activity than other forms of entertainment.  Reading is a fantastic way to work out your mind, and keep your memory in tip top condition.

Remember also to keep a healthy lifestyle.  Exercise and a healthy diet are just as important to your brain as the rest of your body.  By eating healthy and exercising you increase what your body can do in all aspects of life.  Your brain health is no different, and you should follow the same principles.

03 Jul 09 Five Tips To Keep Your Mind Fit

The importance of mental fitness is lost on many people, as physical fitness has taken a front seat as our nation battles the rising obesity rates.  But keeping your mind fit is every bit as important as keeping your body physically fit.  Which is why you should make sure to regularly partake in mind exercises.  These are vitally important to the healthy human being, as exercising your brain will help you fight off memory loss at an older age, increase brain power, and battle back against other possible mental illnesses.  There are well more than a few exercises you can do to get yourself on your way to better mental fitness:

  1. Use your non-dominant hand
  2. Read more books
  3. Change up your routine occasionally
  4. Go shopping without a list
  5. Exercise your body

If you’re right handed, using your left hand for tasks occasionally forces your brain to think differently, and work out how to do the same easy tasks you’re used to in a different way.  This works parts of your brain that you don’t normally use as often as a right hander, and will help you keep your brain in better shape by giving it a full workout.

Reading requires you to not only visually recognize words and characters, but to also interpret them into something visual inside your imagination.  Your brain reads what is written, and then your brain plays out the story in your mind, a good daunting task that strengthens your ability to reason and think.

The problem with a daily routine that’s always the same, is that your brain doesn’t have to think about anything very much.  However if you change that routine, your brain will have to wake up so that you can make decisions on the fly.  Not only does this keep your brain well exercised, but it also helps to wake you up and really prepare for your day.

Going shopping without a list causes you to have to search throughout your mind to remember the things that you need to buy at the store.  Yes it might take you longer to go shopping that way, and you may forget a few items.  But the more you go without a list, the better your memory will get, and you’ll find yourself forgetting items you need less, as well as exercising your brain.

Finally, keep your body fit as well.  By keeping yourself fit and at a healthy body weight you keep a healthy blood flow to your brain.  Ensuring your brain receives the proper nutrients, and that it always has a good air supply from your blood is the best measure for keeping your mind healthy for a long time.

17 Jun 09 Make Your Mind Healthier Too

When I give any advice about fitness, or how to eat right, usually the advice is always themed towards keeping your body as healthy as possible.  But the problem with that, is your body can only be so healthy if you don’t also exercise and care for your mind.  There are regular activities you should be doing within your everyday life to keep your mind as healthy as possible.  This way you can increase your brain power in the form of better memory, cognitive function, and also slow the decay of both through the aging process.

Some of the most common ways to really push that brain power to it’s limits, strengthening your mind and spirit, are relatively easy, and will fit into your everyday life with little extra effort on your part.  Simple activities like reading a book, or playing a game that requires a lot thought like chess or Scrabble, or even just keeping a journal to write out your thoughts all increase your overall mental health.  Like any muscle in your body, your brain needs to be ‘flexed’ regularly to maintain it’s health.  Which is what makes engaging in activities that really force your brain to think, like chess or evoking the depths of your imagination through reading or writing, so important.

Eat as healthily as you can as often as you can, as providing your brain with the proper vitamins throughout your diet is just as important as anything else you could do using your brain to increase health.  Keeping your system fully stocked on all the vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants your body needs is good for every aspect of living.  But also is a huge contribution as to the level of your mental health.

Other than that, just make sure to be true to yourself.  Think about your emotions, and don’t block them out or keep them inside.  Engage in activities that make you think and that require something more than sitting on the couch inside in front of a television.  Read a book outside, with healthy natural light and crisp fresh air.  Just those few simple things will bring you a gigantic step closer to being a happier more complete you.
