08 Oct 09 Reasons To Have A Healthy Heart

The reasons why you should strive to maintain a healthy heart are obvious.  Beyond feeling great, you’ll live longer, and the added blood flow will keep your skin looking great.  Your heart pumps roundabout 2000 gallons of blood every day, why not make that job as easy as possible?  An overworked heart is no good, and these benefits will show you why keeping yours fit is a good idea.

-Better Cardiovascular Health.  Your cardiovascular system is tasked with circulating oxygenated blood throughout your body.  This way your muscles receive the appropriate oxygen that they need to survive.  The more effective your system works, the better the oxygen distribution in your body is going to work.  So being cardiovascularly fit improves all aspects of life.  You’ll have more endurance, and more energy for all of your daily tasks.  So make sure to get your cardio exercise.

-Lower Blood Pressure.  High blood pressure is bad, not only because it’s a sign that your veins and arteries may be the victim of plaque build up.  But also because high blood pressure can damage your heart, and your vital organs, arteries, veins, etc.  When your heart has to work harder it puts a strain on your whole system.  Your heart overworks which is bad for the muscle, your veins are put under extreme pressure, and most importantly your kidneys are put under unnecessary pressure.  All of which is bad.  A low blood pressure keeps things flowing smoothly and effectively, without damaging arteries and organs.

-Relief From Stress.  Something you may not even think about from having a healthy heart.  Working out is stressful if you’re out of shape.  But exercise when your body is fit releases endorphins, creating a calming and more relaxing atmosphere.  Stressing your body is good, because it helps your muscles get stronger and relax, and works out your tension.  The healthier your heart the more effective your workout, and you’d be surprised at how much stress you can run out of your body.

02 Apr 09 Maximize Your Fat Burn Before Bikini Season

So Spring has rolled around and you want to lose those ‘few’ extra pounds you picked up during the winter months, but are finding the road a bit difficult so far.  Well that just may be because you’re doing the wrong exercise.  A common mistake most people make, is in thinking that aerobic and cardiovascular activity is the way to go when  you want to burn fat, but that’s actually not true.  The first thing you want to do is build muscle through resistance exercises like weightlifting.

That’s right, you pretty much want to gain weight so that you can lose weight.  Because muscle is the best fat burner around, and the more muscle you build, the more fat you’re going to burn.  Long term studies have shown that aerobic exercise, while still very healthy for you, is not very beneficial when you’re trying to lose weight.  Mostly because with any aerobic or cardiovascular exercise you just don’t burn as many calories as you could through resistance training, or from building more muscle.

Anything like running, walking, rowing or riding a bike on average only burns 400-500 calories per hour, meaning you would have to do a massive amount of cardio to burn the calories necessary to burn off one pound of fat.  Especially considering one pound of fat contains about 3,500 calories, meaning you would need to do 7 hours of cardio to burn one pound.

Which is where muscle building as a better option comes in, through any resistance exercise.  As one pound of muscle will require about 350-500 calories a week to survive, whereas a pound of fat only needs about 14.  Meaning the more muscle you have on your body, the more calories you’re going to burn, and the more pounds of fat you’ll be able to burn.

But just remember, you don’t want to do one type of exercise too much, as your body will adapt and you won’t see anymore positive results.  What you want to do is constantly change up your routine with resistance exercises as well as cardiovascular exercise.
