The reasons why you should strive to maintain a healthy heart are obvious.  Beyond feeling great, you’ll live longer, and the added blood flow will keep your skin looking great.  Your heart pumps roundabout 2000 gallons of blood every day, why not make that job as easy as possible?  An overworked heart is no good, and these benefits will show you why keeping yours fit is a good idea.

-Better Cardiovascular Health.  Your cardiovascular system is tasked with circulating oxygenated blood throughout your body.  This way your muscles receive the appropriate oxygen that they need to survive.  The more effective your system works, the better the oxygen distribution in your body is going to work.  So being cardiovascularly fit improves all aspects of life.  You’ll have more endurance, and more energy for all of your daily tasks.  So make sure to get your cardio exercise.

-Lower Blood Pressure.  High blood pressure is bad, not only because it’s a sign that your veins and arteries may be the victim of plaque build up.  But also because high blood pressure can damage your heart, and your vital organs, arteries, veins, etc.  When your heart has to work harder it puts a strain on your whole system.  Your heart overworks which is bad for the muscle, your veins are put under extreme pressure, and most importantly your kidneys are put under unnecessary pressure.  All of which is bad.  A low blood pressure keeps things flowing smoothly and effectively, without damaging arteries and organs.

-Relief From Stress.  Something you may not even think about from having a healthy heart.  Working out is stressful if you’re out of shape.  But exercise when your body is fit releases endorphins, creating a calming and more relaxing atmosphere.  Stressing your body is good, because it helps your muscles get stronger and relax, and works out your tension.  The healthier your heart the more effective your workout, and you’d be surprised at how much stress you can run out of your body.

Keeping a good hold on your cholesterol throughout your life, is something that everyone should be doing.  The importance of good cardiovascular health can’t be understated, and a large part of that beyond exercise, is doing what’s necessary diet wise.  Keeping your cholesterol low organically, and as naturally as possible is incredibly healthy for your body, and avoids any of the negative side effects you could suffer from pills or bad health later in life.

One of the best ways to start that is by drinking a glass of water when you wake up in the morning.  Not only does this kick start your metabolism, but it also works to remove toxins in your body.  By getting your system circulating you get your blood flowing, and your body moving as quick as possible.  All of which is great for your health in general.

-For breakfast oatmeal is your friend.  Oatmeal is high in beta-glucan, which is a form of fiber that flows through your blood stream, soaking up the cholesterol that would otherwise be waiting around to clog your arteries.

-If you need a snack throughout the day try almonds.  They contain very powerful antioxidants, including flavonoids which  work to prevent the oxidation of harmful LDL cholesterol.  To keep the healthy effects of almonds make sure to eat them with the skin intact, and unsalted.  The skin contains most of the helpful flavonoids, and salt is bad for your heart, so putting salt on them negates the positive heart health effects.

-An apple a day keeps the doctor away, an incredibly true statement.  Apples also contain a wealth of antioxidants that work to decrease the amount of plaque buildup in your body.  Make sure you eat the outer skin as a part of the apple though, as most of the helpful antioxidants are located there.  Red apples tend to be the source of the most antioxidants.

Finally, just make sure to exercise.  Cardiovascular exercise is your friend, as it improves heart and body health.  By improving how well your cardiovascular system works, you’ll improve how you feel now, and more importantly how you’ll feel ten years from now.

27 Jun 09 Wet Dog Food vs Dry Food

When choosing your dog’s food, first you’ll have to face the choice of which type of dog food you want to purchase for your canine.  What I mean by that is, you’ll have to choose from wet food, or dry food.  Wet food meaning the soft food stored in cans, or other airtight containers, with water and oils.  And dry food, just the standard giant bag of kibble.  Both have fairly different nutritional values, and different pros as well as cons.

First off, we’ll start with wet food.  Wet dog food is healthy because of the water/oil content that dry dog food doesn’t contain, as it will provide your canine with exactly what it needs to maintain a healthy beautiful coat.  Wet dog food also is much closer to what your dog would be eating in the wild, containing less filler than dry dog food on average.

But wet dog food can be bad in the long run as it does not promote good dental health.  Dry dog food strengthens your canine’s teeth and jaw, as well as cleans off excesses of plaque during the eating process.  Wet dog food does nothing to that effect.  And so your dog’s tooth health can actually decay on a diet of mainly wet dog food, unless your dog makes up that difference by chewing bones, or toys often.

Dry dog food contains all of the nutrients and vitamins your animal would need over it’s lifetime.   Dry dog food also contains fewer fats and oils, which is good for your dog’s cardiovascular health.  But dry dog food also contains a lot of roughage, opposed to the sort of more carnivorous meals they would be eating in the wild.  Excesses of corn and wheat found in dry dog food isn’t exactly desirable for your dog’s overall fitness.  Also depending upon your storage practices, dry dog food is more likely to spoil, or attract insects looking for an easy meal.  But simply using a re-sealable plastic container for the food, opposed to just keeping it in the bag, should solve any problems you may have with pests.

Overall I lean more towards dry dog food, because of the health benefits in terms of dental health, as well as cardiovascular fitness.  But then it all depends on which sort of dog you have.
