17 Jun 09 Make Your Mind Healthier Too

When I give any advice about fitness, or how to eat right, usually the advice is always themed towards keeping your body as healthy as possible.  But the problem with that, is your body can only be so healthy if you don’t also exercise and care for your mind.  There are regular activities you should be doing within your everyday life to keep your mind as healthy as possible.  This way you can increase your brain power in the form of better memory, cognitive function, and also slow the decay of both through the aging process.

Some of the most common ways to really push that brain power to it’s limits, strengthening your mind and spirit, are relatively easy, and will fit into your everyday life with little extra effort on your part.  Simple activities like reading a book, or playing a game that requires a lot thought like chess or Scrabble, or even just keeping a journal to write out your thoughts all increase your overall mental health.  Like any muscle in your body, your brain needs to be ‘flexed’ regularly to maintain it’s health.  Which is what makes engaging in activities that really force your brain to think, like chess or evoking the depths of your imagination through reading or writing, so important.

Eat as healthily as you can as often as you can, as providing your brain with the proper vitamins throughout your diet is just as important as anything else you could do using your brain to increase health.  Keeping your system fully stocked on all the vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants your body needs is good for every aspect of living.  But also is a huge contribution as to the level of your mental health.

Other than that, just make sure to be true to yourself.  Think about your emotions, and don’t block them out or keep them inside.  Engage in activities that make you think and that require something more than sitting on the couch inside in front of a television.  Read a book outside, with healthy natural light and crisp fresh air.  Just those few simple things will bring you a gigantic step closer to being a happier more complete you.

08 Apr 09 Finding The Right Futon Mattress

In purchasing a mattress for your futon, there are a few things you need to consider.  Such as, is your first purpose comfort when the mattress is used as a bed, or better functionality for the unit to be used as a couch or chair?  Because that’s going to be your driving force in deciding exactly what sort of mattress is going to best fit your needs.  While all futon mattresses are designed to function as both a place to sleep, and also a piece of furniture, you’ll find some are better suited than others to each task.

As a general rule, no matter what use you’re looking to use as the mattresses main function, you want to look for a mattress about 7-9 inches in thickness.  Anything thicker than that and you’ll start to compromise the effectiveness of being able to easily fold and convert your futon into a comfortable piece of furniture.

There are three main types of futon mattresses to choose from, each with their own function, and each with their own advantages and disadvantages for multiple uses.  The first of which is the foam/cotton interior mattress, easy to fold and form into a very comfortable seating area, and also a very comfortable bed.  The only problem is that these types of mattresses tend to flatten out the longer they are in use, meaning if your futon is strictly a guest seating area or bed, foam/cotton is perfect, but if you’re going to use the futon as your main sleeping area, this may not be the best choice.

The second common mattress type is innerspring, which is perfect for sleeping, as the mattress contains springs similar to a normal bed’s mattress.  Making it extremely comfortable and durable to sleep on, but also meaning if you have a futon that requires a mattress to fold more than one time in conversion from bed to lounger, you’d have a hard time bending the innersprings to your will.  Great for sleeping, not so much for using as a couch or chair.

And then there’s the third type, memory foam futon mattresses, which are probably the best overall, though they can tend to be pricier.  Memory foam, unlike innerspring or cotton, is meant to contour to your body shape, but to then return to it’s original shape when not in use.  Meaning the padding will never compress into a thinner more uncomfortable layer, and is also easy to fold and maneuver as you convert your futon between both a bed and a couch.

There are many types of massage chairs on the market and if you’ve never sat in one, you should. If nothing else, go to a mall or furniture store where these chairs are displayed and give it a try – and then just try to pretend that you don’t want one. Having your very own massager whose fingers never get tired may simply be too much to turn down.

While massage chairs are pretty great for relieving everyday tension, they are even better for people who have frequent back pain. Many use some type of massage chair to relieve tension and to keep the back feeling good. If you let pressure and strain build up in your muscles, it will become harder to do everyday things. For example, if you have a really tight muscle in your back, it may be difficult to stretch, bend all the way over, or perform other routine movements. Message chairs can help you to relieve that tension, thereby helping you do a million other things without the nagging pain so many people have come to accept as “normal”?

Think you don’t have time to utilize a massager of this kind? Maybe you don’t have time not to. Consider this situation. You come home from a long, hard day at work just to realize that you still need to do laundry, cook dinner, do the dishes, and get the kids to bed. It may be overwhelming, but if you take a few minutes as a breather, it can help to get things back into perspective. A few minutes in massage chairs is just one way to do just that. And unlike flopping down on the couch for a few minutes, you are much more likely to feel a little better physically when you get back up.

Many people have so much stress that it is actually hard to sleep at night. One way that many people cope with this is through pain relievers. This may be okay for the short term, but natural remedies are always a better alternative. One way that you may help yourself relax is with massage chairs. And the more you use them, the better your back will begin to feel. Just imagine how you could feel in a week if you got a massage every night.

Everyone has likes and dislikes when it comes to a massage. Even though massage chairs are only machines, there are alternatives for everyone. If you don’t like your massage to be very firm, you can turn this down on most models. Also, you can make most models concentrate more or less on certain areas of your back.
