This is the concluding part of you are an expert, own your domain, in this part, we will see how hosting a show, forming a group, strategic alliances, etc. can establish you as an expert in your niche.

Conduct survey

Conducting a relevant survey, analyzing the result, and publishing it in the trade journal, in the newspaper, or on the Internet will establish you as the one who keep tab on the niche’s development. This surely will make you an expert in the eyes of others.

Form strategic power alliance

From an alliance with those who complement the services you offer and who are in the position of power in the industry. This alliance will prove fruitful for you. People, just by the virtue of your partnering some other hotshot, will start seeing you as an expert.

Talk to media and get quoted

You will often find experts on the radio, television, or in print saying one thing or another about the industry they are into. This is a sure and certain way of getting seen as an expert. Befriend with media people and seize the opportunity that comes your way.

Host a show

If you get an opportunity to then go ahead and grab the chance of hosting a talk show on the radio, television, or on the Internet (may be on an online radio or through a podcast, or a webinar, etc.). If you are not getting any opportunity then create one.

In this fifth part of the series, You are An Expert, Own Your Domain, we will see how writing in trade journals, releasing research papers, etc., will establish yourself as an expert in your niche. The skills that you have acquired so far will help you in the activities I am suggesting here.

Publish articles

Do not assume that people will think you are an expert just because you or other says so. Some people may need only this much but most of us need proof, and a published article is a very strong proof of your expertise in your chosen field. Choose business publications, trade magazines, or even daily newspaper to write articles.

Publish free newsletter

Publishing a newsletter and circulating it for free is another thing that an expert does to establish his dominance in his chosen niche. Try to build a list by giving away something of value for free, and start mailing daily or weekly newsletters.

Write white papers

Writing a technical white paper is one of the most important tools to establish yourself as an expert in your niche. White papers are not read by general audience. It is read by experts, which means that you will opportunity to show other experts in your niche that you are also in the league. A well-written whitepaper will get many friends, followers, and admirers for you. You will earn respect by doing this.

Write newbie guides

Helping newbie solve their basic problems is one of the things expert does every day. You should write a free guide (of 10 or 20 pages) to help newbie. Be honest in helping them.

In the first part of you are an expert, own your domain, I talked about the internal changes you need to bring in yourself to instantly sound and feel like an expert in your domain. In this issue of the mini-series, I will talk about how to upgrade you skills and keep reinventing yourself in order to keep your position as an expert in your chosen niche secure.

Subscribe to Newsletters

An expert is a person who knows most of the relevant detail about his domain (if not all), and you can only hope to know all if the information is presented to you in a platter. Thankfully, it is served that way. All you need to provide the address (e-mail ID) where you want it to be delivered. Keep yourself apprised of recent findings, thoughts, ideas, development, and research, etc., in your niche.

Set Google Alert

Getting news by the hour is too late. We are the generation of “NOW”, and we should get it everything here and now. Be it information about the recent development (by recent I meant development in last 10 or 20 minutes), or the latest breaking news (the news that broke 30 or 60 seconds ago). You can get this by setting an alert for your niche. Setting up Google Alert will keep you on top of the news in your niche. This is what an expert is supposed to do: be on top of all the development in the industry.

Develop your skills

A true expert is a person who keeps on investing resources in continuous learning. Learning should never stop, if you intend to become an expert. Take a certificate course that educates advance students like you in your chosen field. Attend seminars, be a part of industry gatherings, read books, attend webinars, etc. to upgrade your skill.

Always remember, the moment you stop growing you stop being seen as an expert.
