24 Jul 09 A Few Tips To Save Your Job

During an economic recession when most people are most concerned with the ability to find work, it’s just as important to ensure that if you’re lucky enough to have a job at the moment, you keep that job.  Part of understanding that better, and also respecting your job better and realizing the value of still being able to work in a recession, is recognizing that you are lucky to have the position.  That’s not to discount your skill or ability in the given job, but it’s also not to say that if you had applied that same skill and ability at a different company, you’d still be out of work.

So the key to first recognizing the importance of your job is waking up every morning and just being grateful that you have the opportunities for work that you currently enjoy.  If you are working right now, in a time where jobs are falling left and right, you are fortunate to have your position, and know that and feel the pride.  Respecting that you are fortunate is a good first step to ensuring you keep that job.

Next, you may think the best tactic is to excel to make yourself look like an asset to the company, and someone that they would never want to lose.  But this tactic actually gets you fired more often than not, because it’s sets you apart and makes you look different from the other employees.  Being different in the corporate world is for the most part, a bad thing, as any time you stand out there are always negatives that can be derived from that success.  You want to do well, but you don’t want to offer stand out performances week in and week out, or you could find yourself looking for a new job.

Of course, don’t let yourself do poorly either, as that would be just more horrific for your fortunes.  Performing poorly is pretty much self explanatory as a good way to get yourself fired.  Never be the lowest employee on the quality totem pole, as that will not only make it difficult for you to keep your current job, but it can really effect you negatively in finding a new one.

Finally, just remember you’re only part of a machine that the higher ups want to run as smoothly as possible.  Just play your part to the best of your ability, fit into the system, or else you’ll find yourself out of the system.  You don’t have to be yourself in the workplace, as you’re being paid basically not to be, and to just do your job.  Remember that and keep your work face on, stay neutral or keep a smile on all the time, so you look like a hardworking content employee.  Nothing is more important.

03 Jul 09 Get Yourself Out Of Debt

Part of the reason we’re in such a bad economic recession is the mounting debt that most of the population carries.  So there’s a good chance that you, yourself are also in debt to some degree.  One of the biggest problems that comes with that debt is trying to find a way out, as debt is a constant battle that you could end up fighting for most of your life.  In fact most people don’t necessarily even know where to turn when faced with mounting bills, as wading deep into the waters of debt can feel insurmountable, to the point where you fear you’ll never be able to overcome the seemingly never ending pile up of interest rates and penalty fees.

But there are plenty of things you can do, such as debt consolidation to gain a little breathing room and make some headway on that mounting debt.  The first and most tried and true strategy to put into action, is consolidating any of your credit debt that may be spread out over multiple cards onto one card with the lowest interest rate available.  This way you stop your cards with higher interest rates from building up more cash that you’ll have to pay back later, and you have the opportunity to really eat into that debt.

Another quick fix is a home equity loan, if you own your own house.  This is a quick loan you can take out from your bank in which the collateral is your house.  So you’ll be able to get a good amount of money quickly, and usually home equity loans don’t have to be paid back as quickly as credit card bills, and the interest rates tend to be lower.  Not to mention the fact that there are all manner of tax deductions available for interest built up from home equity loans.

If those fail, there’s always a credit counseling agency.  They will work with the agency’s collecting your debts to consolidate the payments and reduce your interest rate to the lowest possible amount, making your debt free life reclamation much, much easier.

26 Jun 09 Go Green At The Grocery Store

We’ve all seen how common reusable grocery bags have become as adjusting your lifestyle to be more environmentally friendly has come to the forefront in recent years, more so than ever before.  Although still not many people use reusable grocery bags, and that’s a bigger problem than you may think.  You don’t often consider just how harmful those plastic grocery bags can be to the environment.  But consider a few facts about how harmful those plastic bags can be:

  • The nonrenewable fossil fuels used to create just 14 plastic bags is enough to drive the average car a mile.  Factor that in with the knowledge that in America on average 380 billion plastic bags are used and disposed of every year.
  • Plastic bags don’t biodegrade in garbage dumps.
  • On average plastic bags contribute to the deaths of 100,000 marine animals a year.
  • On average it costs a city about 17 cents per plastic bag to properly dispose of the materials.  In an economic recession, that really, really starts to add up very quickly.

Those are just a very few of the negative factors resulting from overuse of plastic bags.  Our society has become so dependant on them, and yet it’s such an easy problem to combat, or erase through the use of the affordable reusable bags that basically every grocery store sells nowadays.  That’s a huge carbon footprint that could easily be swept aside if only more people would take action to go green with their shopping lifestyle.

And just in case you’re thinking, well I use recyclable paper bags, and so I’m not contributing to the problem, keep in mind:

  • On average a paper bag produces 60-70% more harmful gasses that contribute to global warming during production, than plastic bags.
  • Though the bags are recyclable, around 80% of all paper bags end up in landfills where they do not biodegrade.
  • Paper bags also require 3 times the energy of a plastic bag, to produce one paper bag.

So remember these facts the next time you’re at the grocery store, watching how many resources are lost that don’t have to be, and choose to lead by example with your reusable shopping bags.
