08 Dec 09 Inspire Your Office To Go Green

Going green is a great idea for all of us.  The earth provides us with a great home, and it’s our duty to respond by keeping earth as clean and healthy as possible.  One way to do that, is to influence your office to be more environmentally friendly.  Changing your lifestyle is a great start, but businesses produce much more waste than a person.  Influencing those businesses to change is the best way to really start making the world a better place to live.

One way to do that is to start a recycling program in your office.  If you don’t already recycle, try putting in a few recycle bins for old papers that you no longer need.  Or even better, convert to digital and you won’t need the paper in the first place.  By using email to send documents and information, you can eliminate most paper entirely.  That’s even better than recycling because you eliminate the need for paper in the first place.

Try to eliminate lights that you don’t need.  Lights consume energy that doesn’t need to be wasted.  Try using natural light whenever possible in the day time.  This way you’ll reduce how long the lights are on, and it’s better for everyone at the office to use natural light.  Your eyes will thank you!

When purchasing new equipment, try and influence your managers to buy eco-friendly products.  Look to products that advertise themselves to be energy saving alternatives.  Also try using power strips around the office.  These eliminate idle power currents from lights, or computers not in use.  So the company saves money, and you conserve energy.  Who wouldn’t want to do both?

Finally, remember when you’re purchasing that new equipment, that your old electronics can be recycled.  Electronics waste makes a huge contribution to the heavy metal pollution that’s so prevalent in the environment.  By recycling and disposing of these electronics through the proper channels, we can eliminate the harm that they’ve done to the environment, and people.

20 Jun 09 Kill Weeds Without Harmful Chemicals

The heat is rising, the weather is getting nicer, and as any homeowner knows, that means that the weeds in are in prime form to stick up from the gaps in your sidewalk, and to try and take over your lawn or garden.  A constant plague, one that will drive you to use any number of weed killing products and chemicals.  No doubt doing more damage than you think to your garden and lawn.  But before you turn to those products that are so harmful to your plants and even yourself, keep in mind there are plenty of environmentally friendly alternatives that will still yield the same positive results.

Take water for example, you wouldn’t think water would be an effective exterminator for weeds would you?  Well at room temperature water isn’t going to do anything but help the weeds grow, but boil that water and you have one of the most effective natural weed killing weapons.  You’ll want to boil the water, and while it’s still steaming hot, pour it directly onto those troublesome weeds.  Obviously this strategy isn’t going to work well on lawn weeds or garden, because of the surface area the weeds usually encompass.  But on any of those troublesome buggers that are pushing up around or between cracks in your pavement, this is the perfect solution.

For a wider dispersal to kill weeds in places like gardens and on your lawn, a solution of lemon juice or even saline is your best bet.  Both are 100% biodegradable, won’t harm the environment or your health with harmful chemicals, and are extremely effective at killing weeds.  Spraying weeds with either will slowly destroy them, and stop them from cropping up again.  Usually either solution won’t kill the weeds as fast as the harmful chemicals, but rest assured those weeds will be eradicated eventually.

Plus you’ll have the added benefit of a healthier yard and local environment for having not poured more unnecessary chemicals into the ground.
