20 Dec 09 Making Sure Your Child’s Toys Are Safe

So, you’ve been doing some last minute holiday shopping, and you found some perfect toys for a few of the children in your family, but are they safe?  Many people don’t really think twice about the contents of a toy, before purchasing.  But that’s something you absolutely should consider, as new research suggests that some toy chemicals previously thought to be harmless, can have negative effects on your child’s health.  Just like the lead based paint scare in the past, there are a few warning signs you should look for, before buying a toy.

The first warning sign is in what sorts of chemicals were used to make the toy.  Keep the main harmful ones in mind.  These are most commonly arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium.  All of which are bad for a child to be exposed to, and more common than you may think.  Most countries that export to America have laws that dictate full disclosure of these chemicals on toy labels.  So make sure to check before you buy, and stay away from anything that seems risky.

Another toy type to watch out for is anything that appears to contain PVC.  PVC is a type of plastic that can cause respiratory damage, as well as central nervous system, reproductive system, and liver damage.  PVC or polyvinyl chloride often appears as a softer plastic, usually with a shiny appearance with the texture of vinyl.  Any toy that contains PVC should be avoided whenever possible, so be mindful.

Watch out for the bargains.  Instead of buying a whole slew of low priced toys, to increase the gift bounty under the tree, try spending more on a few gifts instead.  Most of the time the bargain toy sales are the ones that tend to contain more harmful chemicals than expensive and reputable toy brands.  The extra money will mean a lot in the long run, and exposing a child to fewer strange chemicals is always worth the price.

12 Aug 09 7 Warning Signs Your Eye May be in Danger

Technology has changed everything: the way we talk, the way we walk, the way we listen, and the way we see, and many changes has bad effect on us. I am not a pessimist, so I will not go on fault finding spree in the technology we use in our daily life. I know how wonderful it is, but still, technology is always susceptible to misuse and overuse. If the use of technology can improve the quality of our life then the misuse of it can have detrimental effect on the quality of our life. Our eyes, fingers, backbone, back, ears, and neck are more susceptible to damage, but the body part that is more prone to illness is our eyes. Eyes are the most vulnerable part of our body, and the sad thing is, for the most part of the day, they are exposed to screen radiations from our laptop, television, portable video player, or cell phone. To maintain a good vision, we need to get alarmed at the sight of any of the following warning signs:

Burning eye: Doctors say splashing cold water on eyes with burning sensation is only a short-term solution for the problem that could have a very bad effect in the long run.

Dryness: Dry eyes are the first warning sign send by your eyes. Do not overlook this symptom. Use lubricating drop to fight off this problem.

Watery eyes: No, this is not the tear you are shedding for your mom or your girlfriend. It is a side effect of spending too much time in front of your PC. Watery eyes are the witness of the stress your eyes are bearing.

Double vision or blurring: if you leave the stressed eyes untreated for long, you will end up seeing two people where there is just one, and in some cases the vision also get blurred.

Redness or irritation: so, you worked day and night to finish that project, and you even do not bother to take a break. The irritation you are feeling in your eyes are the direct result of those break-less hours. Even the redness is because of that.

Headaches: If you are getting frequent headaches accompanied by severe eye pain, it could be computer eye syndrome. Get it treated.

Prickly eyes: One feels prickling sensation when one works on any digital screen for long without any breaks.

Your eyes are precious. It helps you see the colors, rainbow, butterfly, and even that hot girl in your neighborhood; hence keep it safe!
