07 Nov 09 How Your Business is Costing Your Kid’s Life Part – III

Going green is not just financially viable, but it is a socially responsible action as well, which gives you pride and your kids a healthy and safe environment to live in. This is the third part of the series, and like Part-1 and Part-II, here again I will suggest you some tweaking that will help you reduce carbon footprint.

Print double sided drafts

A printed draft has no use other than reviewing what you wrote on screen for quality and consistency. This document doesn’t go out of the office then why not take print on both side of the paper for drafts? Also do not use normal printing for draft documents, use fast draft mode. The color consumption is less. Print as many double-sided documents as possible.

Use recyclable paper

Recycling is one of the most notable ways to reduce the carbon emission. By using recyclable or recycled products, you secure the future of your kids. Look for the paper that can either be recycled or which consists of recycled content while shopping for papers for your organization.

Reuse Packaging material

Our habit of discarding the packaging material after one-time use costs us our environment. Develop a habit of reusing the packaging material. For this, all you need to do is remain cautious while opening the package. You should also encourage your suppliers to take back the package and reuse it; rather, I would suggest you to do business with only those suppliers only who take their packaging back for reuse.

Having a green business is no more an option. We have well-passed that stage when it was one of those things which was nice to do; now it is mandatory for every company to go green. If you do not do that, you are costing your children their life. Due to your negligence they well breathe highly toxic air and live in the world that will have extreme temperatures on the either end.

If they suffer, it will be your fault!

You can make it better for your kids, and for this you do not need to reconstruct your business inside out. All you need to do is start adopting green-practices for business. Through this series, I will tell you the little changes you can make in your daily habits, which will reduce the burden you put on the environment and your kids’ future.

Instead of writing a behemoth piece with 10s or 20s of Green business advices, I have broken down this series in small chunk to make these advices executable. These tips can be used by even home based business owners. Now the carbon emitters cannot hide behind the lie that he or she does not know how to go green.

Use Hibernate

Enable hibernation feature of your computer, and put your computer in hibernation when you do not need it. Stand-by is not very good because your system still consumes electricity though a little.

When you resume your windows from hibernation, all your applications opened while closing gets back to life as well, which further save time and power needed to open the multiple applications you usually work in. You can save 10-20% electricity by putting your system to hibernation.

To enable hibernation go to the power setting from the control panel.

Turn off all your equipments

Do not leave your printer, photocopier, or fax machine on when you do not need it. Develop a habit of turning off all the unnecessary equipments. Switching the equipment back on hardly takes a flick of the switch then why to leave it switched on and waste energy? Switching them off will save 25 % of electricity wastage.

Turn of the light and fan

Most of us have this bad habit of leaving the room or office without caring to see if the fan and lights are switched off or not. This is not good. Make sure that all the lights and fans are switched off when everyone is out of your office.

Make it a rule that the last person who leaves the office will be responsible for this. Also make sure that the air conditioners are not just switched off using the remote, rather it switched off from the main power source.

Go ahead and apply these go-green principles to your workplace, and see collectively how much difference we can make.
