09 Oct 09 The Go Green Diet

Eating an environmentally diet is not only better for the earth, but also better for you, and your wallet.  Going green in your eating will have you feeling better, looking better, and doing more for the environment.  The key way to do that is to eat essentially vegetarian.  Meat based diets contribute to deforestation, world hunger, and consumption of fossil fuels and water.  If everyone in the US adhered to a vegetarian diet, it would cut oil and water waste by almost half.  So it’s worth doing your part to save our valuable natural resources.

While eating vegetarian sounds like a chore, especially if you were raised on meat, it’s actually not that hard.  In the beginning, try just cutting down on the intake of meat.  Buy it less, and instead focus on vegetable and fruit options instead.  Cut down your meat portions.  You’ll leave the meal feeling better, and you won’t be compromising flavor.  The cooking options might have to get a little more creative, but that can be fun in itself as well.

After that you can try a meat substitute.  Try veggie burgers, or vegetable chicken tenders, anything like that.  They still taste great, and will leave you feeling even better.  Plus the vegetable substitutes have more healthy lean protein, and little to no fat and cholesterol.  Same great taste, without the horrible consequences of eating fatty meat laden meals.

Also to help you feel great on your new diet, try to incorporate one meal a day made from raw food.  This means uncooked vegetables and fruits.  A salad is a good way to combine the two into one great tasting dish.  By making sure the food isn’t cooked, you ensure that all the natural digestive enzymes and antioxidants remain intact.  These are ridiculously healthy for you, and you’ll feel the effects of that raw food  meal in no time at all.

By now you should be feeling so great you’ll never want to eat meat again.  If you get a craving, just remember how bad producing meat is for the environment.  Don’t forget to think about how good you feel now as well!

23 Jul 09 Eating To Increase Your Metabolism

The key to burning fat and losing weight is increasing your metabolism, as your metabolic rate determines how quickly you burn off the calories that you intake on a daily basis, as well as how quickly your body will use up the fat stored you’ve stored to even out a calorie deficit.  Therefore the higher your metabolism, the more fat you are going to burn more quickly.  Losing weight is all about taking caloric deficiencies so that your body will use your own fat stores as energy, eliminating body fat.  So metabolism is your chief concern, and here are a few foods that will fit with your diet, and keep your engine burning as quickly as possible.

Eating healthy is the best way to keep your metabolism up, which means concentrating on vegetables, lean protein, fruits, healthy fats, and whole grains.  Some of the best vegetables to look for include spinach, carrots, cabbage, asparagus, leafy greens like lettuce, and beans.  All of these are low calorie, and loaded with the energy, vitamins, and minerals you need to keep yourself going.  They also are foods that your body will process quickly, because they don’t contain preservatives or other unnatural chemicals, so your body can begin to digest the food immediately.

Fruits you want to look to include, berries, tomatoes, kiwi, and citrus although really any fresh food is good for you.  As a rule you want to stay away from sugar when you’re trying to lose weight, as sugar does nothing for you but turn into fat when sugar is stored in your system.  But the natural sugar found in fruits is actually good for you, providing energy with a lower calorie count, and the right stuff to boost your metabolism.  Remember, kiwi is one of the most healthy fruits in the world, as it’s loaded with antioxidants, and vitamins unlike any other fruit.  So eating kiwi is positive for making you look and feel younger, and for boosting that metabolic rate.

When it comes to lean protein you want to stay away from the red meats, in favor of healthy lean proteins like chicken.  Chicken is low in fat, but also packs that protein punch you need to build muscle, which also boosts your metabolism and helps increase your fat burn.

As far as whole grains are concerned, remember not to cut carbohydrates out of your diet.  Not eating carbs to lose weight is actually for the most part a myth, as cutting out carbs is something you would have to do for your entire life to yield positive results.  Whereas eating the right sort of complex carbohydrates levels out your blood sugar, helping you feel full and healthy more often, decreasing the chances you’ll have the temptation to eat something you shouldn’t.  Also complex carbs give you the healthy energy you need to keep moving, and exercising, building up that muscle and increasing your metabolism.

25 Jun 09 Foods That Burn Fat

There is no such thing as a diet that will yield you quick results with little to no effort on your part.  And as a smart consumer, you should ensure you never tread into the pitfalls of the dieting trend industry by lying to yourself and believing that there is an easier alternative than the tried and true method of diet and exercise.  Seriously, nothing works as well as eating healthier and exercising more.  But within those bounds there are also a few foods that you can add to your diet to help in your bid to eradicate that belly fat.

Seven of the most potent healthy diet choices are:

  1. Fiber
  2. Water
  3. Salads
  4. Lean Protein
  5. Berries
  6. Nuts and Seeds
  7. Olive Oil

Fiber is absolutely your friend, as it’s not only extremely healthy for you digestive system, but also so that you can control your blood sugar levels.  The more in check your blood sugar is, the more in check your appetite will be.  Also foods higher in fiber tend to be lower in calories. So always go whole grain.

Water is a fantastic substitute for your usual soft drink, or coffee, or energy drink.  You may not get the same caffeine/sugar kick, but your body will feel much, much better.  Not to mention the fact that water is a 0 calorie drink.

Eating a salad made only from uncooked fresh fruits and vegetables is not only healthy, but also low calorie, as long as you stick to a reasonable portion size.  Use something simple like lemon, or another fruit to serve as that dressing flavor, and you’ll be cutting the calories, and raising your intake of healthy fruits and vegetables.

Lean protein is fantastic as protein has few calories and is a great muscle builder.  More muscle means more calories burned more easily.  Not to mention lean protein can boost your metabolism.  Look to lean meats like chicken, or go for healthier alternatives like soy protein.

Berries like fiber helps level out your blood sugar level, helping you keep better control of that appetite, plus they’re full of healthy antioxidants and vitamins.

Nuts and seeds are a fantastic substitute to other fatty foods you may eat.  In part because they contain monounsaturated fat, which is infinitely easier for you to burn off than fats found in most other fatty foods or snacks.

Olive oil, the healthiest oil around.  Not only is olive oil good for you, but also contains enzymes that turn off your craving towards other unhealthy and fatty oils.  Using olive oil instead of other oils is proven to decrease the amount of saturated fats you intake, increasing your likelihood of keeping that fat burned off for good.
