30 Dec 09 Send A Solider Some Holiday Spirit

Well the holiday season is pretty much over, but that doesn’t mean your giving spirit needs to end with the time of year.  Think of those less fortunate than us this holiday season.  Namely those men and women stationed overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan, who could desperately use a little help to make their lives easier.  I think it’s only right that we try and make the lives of those committing themselves to government service, a little brighter.  All it takes is a little effort, and knowledge of the right place to turn.

Websites like Anysoldier.com provide you with a fantastic resource to help those in need.  The website is set up to help you find soldiers and the items that they desperately need, and gives you directions for donating those items to them.  It’s a great and inexpensive way to do what you can for the troops.

Consider making a money donation through a company like the USO.  There your money will be used towards any number of good causes, like providing soldiers with the necessary resources to call their families back home.  You don’t have to make a big donation, any little bit will help, and it’s infinitely better than giving nothing.

If you got a new cell phone for Christmas, instead of throwing out the old one, consider donating your phone to the troops.  You can get a free package postage paid package at your local post office that you can use to donate your old phone to the troops.  That means giving a soldier a chance to call home and talk to their loved ones again.  Isn’t that worth the effort?

Finally, when you’re shopping any of the after Christmas sales, try to be mindful of the stores around you.  Many offer opportunities to donate to troops, whether through in store purchases, or actually taking direct donations.  Take advantage of those opportunities, and try and shop at the stores that donate more to the troops, especially if those donations are influenced by sales numbers.

17 Sep 09 Stop Procrastinating

Procrastination is a very bad trait for you to have in your personal inventory.  Mostly because if you’re a procrastinator, you’ll find that you almost never achieve the things that you intend to achieve.  Whether in life in general, or at your job, or in the small accomplishments you want to make in your personal life.  Procrastination can be a hard habit to break, but with some work it can be done, and it’s worth your time.  All you have to do is stop procrastinating about breaking that habit for good.

First ask yourself what the biggest problem causing your procrastination is.  Do you get distracted easily when you try to do something?  Do you lack motivation?  By targeting what the problem is, you can look towards changing that aspect of your personality, and hopefully eliminate your tendency to procrastinate.

First off, whether you are distracted easily or unmotivated, try breaking up large tasks into smaller ones.  If it’s a big yard project you’re trying to tackle, try accomplishing the whole by just doing a little at a time.  Like tending to a garden, try just doing one short task each day, and you’ll find that you’ve accomplished everything before too long.  This is a good first step to stopping procrastination in the future, as it gets you on the horse accomplishing the tasks you set for yourself.

Try eliminating distractions if you find yourself easily taken from your tasks.  Try leaving your cell phone inside while you’re out in the yard.  Or try turning off the background noise of a television or radio, or your iPod, so that you can have full concentration on your tasks.  Sometimes that little bit of background noise can distract you enough that you can’t keep your thoughts together.  That simple of a change can help you stop procrastinating.

29 Aug 09 Start Your Own Garden

Starting your own garden is not only good for the environment, but can also be very therapeutic to your own daily stresses.  Sure it’s hard work, but hard work is always good for you, and it’s good to have a project to do from day to day.  Why not garden?  The only problem is, if you’ve never set up your own garden before, where do you start?

Well, first you’ll want to find a good spot for your garden to grow.  Do this by inspecting your yard, you want a good sunny spot, so that the plants will receive plenty of healthy sunlight.  But also an area that you feel accentuates your yard, giving it an uplifting touch.  Just make sure your desired location, and the amount of sunlight available meet a comfortable middle ground.

Also consider that the more flat the surface you’re planning on making into a garden, the easier it’s going to be for you to convert the area.  Hillside surfaces can be much harder on you when actually forming the garden itself, and can be a pain to uphold, as almost every task will be made more difficult.  So look for a good flat piece of ground.

Don’t go too large with your first garden.  Start out small so that you don’t overwork yourself on your first attempt, otherwise you may be less likely to try in the future.

Next you’ll need to remove all sod, grass and weeds from the area.  Go deep so as to get most of the roots.  The more grass and weeds that you can eliminate at the root, the easier your life will be later.  Try relocating any of the sod and weeds that you want to remove into your own compost pile.  This way you can reuse the earth you’ve moved as food for the plants you’re going to introduce, later.

Now you’ll want to till up the dirt a little bit, before you start planting your flowers, or anything else you’re interested in planting.  This way you spread the nutrients around, and also till up any leftover roots from grass or weeds, eliminating them from your garden.

Finally, it’s time to start planting.  Follow the directions of the particular plant you’re trying to grow, and make sure to pay careful attention as you tend your garden.  You’ll find it may take a lot of work, but you’ll have a nicer healthier yard for your efforts.  You’ll probably find yourself feeling less stressed as well.
