18 Nov 09 Should You Work From Home – Advantages

In the last post, we talked about disadvantages of work from home career, and after finishing writing that, I realize many of my readers may not be aware of the benefits, and get dissuaded from taking work from home career. Hence, I decided to write about the advantages of work from home career as well. As said in the previous post, my goal is to help you decide on what you want to do by giving you both perspectives.

Advantages of work from home career

  • Flexibility: Once you start your work from home career, you will notice that though you have to work a bit more, but you are not slave of a clock. You are free to work whenever you want and leave the work whenever you wish to, until you do not missed the deadlines.
  • No Hidden Expenses: How many of us count the hidden expenses one incurs when one goes to work, everyday. I am talking about the traffic fines, paid parking, vehicle petrol, commuting expense, etc. You save all this, when you work from home.
  • Custom workspace: Unlike your regular 9-5 job, you can customize the way you want your office to look and feel. You can set your own lighting, adjust air conditioner according to your wishes, and organize the stuff the way they suit you, etc. This mi=ay not look much, but believe me it is a huge advantage, as it will significantly increase your productivity.
  • Time for family: Many 9-5 professionals leave their day job in favor of their work from home career because they feel this way they can spend more time with their family. Indeed, what could be better than being with your family even in office hours? After all, family matters.
  • Improved work-life balance: Professionals engaged in 9-5 regular job (which is neither 9 to 5 nor regular ever) are often found struggling to balance their work and family life. The kind of pressure put by greedy corporate always tilt this balance in favor of work and more work, which leaves the professional struggling. This struggle never ends until you switch your “career type” from regular (irregular to be more precise) to work from home.

06 Nov 09 American Workplace is Scarier than We Thought

In a national survey conducted by CareerBuilder, it was found that 1 in every 5 US employee (18%) has a scary work place. The sample size of the survey was 4000. 18 percent workers said that the workload they are having is enough to scare them. This data indeed is frightening, and the decision makers need to take this result seriously, and make some key changes in the work distribution, so that they do not end up being exhausted, which will mean lack in productivity.

Other things that scare the US workers are as follow:

  • 9% of the total respondent said that performance reviews fright them.
  • 9% of the total respondent said that tight deadlines fright them.
  • 8% of the total respondent said that long work hours fright them.
  • 7% of the total respondent said that their bosses are the most dreadful thing.
  • 69% of the total respondent said that sitting through the meeting is very scary.

The survey was conducted by Harris Interactive. The sample consisted of 4,285 US full-time workers. All the respondent were at least 8 years old and none of them were self-employed or employed by the government. The survey was conducted online between August 20 and September 9, 2009.

This result essentially shows how corporate worker feels in his job, and how high is their dissatisfaction level. The HR department should take notice of this, and should make amendments before it is too late.

07 Oct 09 Daily Time Management Tips – 7

In this part of Daily Time Management Tips series, I will discuss about some minor tweaking in your day-to-day activities that would help you manage your time better. As we know, it is not always the big things that matter; it is small little pieces that make our life wonderful.

Take Notes

Taking notes is very important when it comes to time management. When you take note you put your thought on a piece of paper, and thus you do not need to rely on your memory to remind you of the work you need to do, which saves your time, and help you remain on course.

Track Time

Tracking time is another important habit that you should develop. When you track time you know which activity is taking how much time, and thus planning for a day becomes easier. This way you will not bite more than you could chew. You will only schedule the work that you could finish in a day, which will keep your stress level in check.

Short conversation

Technology is a time saver, and technology is a time killer too. It depends on you how you want to use it; you can either use it to maximize your productivity or you can use it to crush the production. Telephone and telephonic conversation are two such things which could be used both ways. You use telephones and mobiles to stay update with the ongoing activity, and to apprise your client with the development. There is another group that uses these tools to kill time by striking long, never-ending conversation with their friends and families during the office hour. This should be avoided.

During the work days, keep the telephonic conversation to talking essential things only. Do not indulge in pep talks. It will not only save your time, but will also save you some money, which you can spend with the person you talks so much on phone. Which will be better? Long conversations and less productivity, or short conversation and some extra cash to spend with those whom you like to talk with?

I will choose the latter one. What about you?
