01 Dec 09 Why You Should Get Over the Fact That You Are Jobless

Although the economy has started to regain its lost shape, at least they say so, not all of us are getting a job. The time is still tough for those who are out of job. They are not able to pay their bills, and support themselves and their families. They are having hard time, but still complaining will do no good. I have charted this road myself, and I know from my personal experience that complaining does not do any good. It does more harm than it can every benefit us.

Instead of focusing your energy on finding fault, you should concentrate your efforts on building skill set that will land you into your dream job. You need to ask the following question, as it will help in understanding the reason for your being jobless:

  • Has the industry frozen hiring? If they have completely frozen the hiring (means not taking even a single soul, which is highly unlikely) then either look into other industry or wait till it start hiring people. In the meantime, you can do something part-time or freelance.
  • If the industry is hiring people (even if just a few) then you need to ask yourself:
    • Why you are not the one who is hired?
    • Is there any gap between what skill industry expect an the skills you have?
    • Do you mess it up in the interview?
    • Or is it the remuneration that you are quoting is not going well with the companies you are going for interviews?
  • If you are not getting interview calls then you must need to find out why?
    • Is there any problem in your cover letter or resume?
    • Are you qualified enough for the post you are applying?
    • Do you meet the required demand?
    • Are you lacking in experience?

You can only find these things and work on them, when you are out of your complaining zone. No one can do both the things (complaining and finding fault in oneself as well as situation) at once. Get over the fact that you are unemployed, and start working on improving your employability.

29 Oct 09 Joe Wonders, Should He Quit His Job Part – 1

The economy is improving and many people are now contemplating switch. Joe is one of them. He has been in tremendous pressure during recession, and he believes he was over worked and under paid. Hence, he want to change as soon as he can, but he is worried, what if he end up making a wrong decision? What if he ends up being in a less paying job? Will he be better off after the switch?

Through this and next couple of blog posts, we will help Joe make his decision. In this post, we will look at his present job and analyze, if he should quit or not.

Present Job Analysis

Before Joe makes a plan to move and start posting résumé in every nook and corner, he should see in what shape his job is and how he is performing there.

  • How flexible is his job schedule? Does he make to do long hours at job? What if the new job asks for more time which his family cannot approve of?
  • Is there any pending benefit plan that might get jeopardize, if he quits now?
  • Does he get any medical or accidental benefit? Will he be in position to pay, if the new company does not cover these? Better still, Joe should see if the new job has the benefits he is availing here?
  • Is the new job as satisfying or more satisfying then the current one? what if the new job suck life out of him?
  • Will he miss an opportunity to learn, if he quit this job? What will be the dollar value of training he will be missing due to the job switch?
  • Is he doing a good job in his present job? Will his boss vouch for it? Joe should ask his boss, if he can write a recommendation for him for the new job. Boss will not hesitate, if he has been doing a good work.
  • Is he quitting out of strength or is he quitting out of weakness?
  • Is his boss satisfied with his performance and can Joe’s boss give him a referral.
  • Will he be able to give 3 references from his current job?
  • Is the reason for quitting convincing enough?

These are the question Joe should answer about his job before he can make his mind. In the next post, we will see what financial considerations Joe should have before bidding farewell to his current job.

19 Oct 09 Improving Your Knee Health

Strengthening your knee muscles is a good idea for anyone.  By strengthening your knee muscles you protect yourself from injuries, and improve joint health as a whole.  You’ll notice the difference of good knee health later in life.  The good choices you make today to keep yourself in shape will have a huge impact on how well your knees treat you when you’re old.  So get up out of your chair and try a few knee exercises!

Before you start make sure to do a proper warm up.  Stretch your legs and then walk around briskly for a good five minutes.  That will get your thigh and knee muscles ready for some action, and will prevent you from straining them while performing an exercise.  Remember that each exercise should be done at a slow steady pace, one that’s comfortable to you for maximum effectiveness.

Start out by trying a few standing squats.  Adding those to your routine will increase the muscle mass in your knees fairly quickly, and effectively.  To do a proper standing squat, start out by standing up straight.  You then want your feet to be shoulder length apart, and keep your head staring straight forward.  Then slowly squat down to the point that your thighs are parallel to the floor.  Hold the squat for a few seconds, then slowly return to a standing position.  Remember to go slowly so that you don’t risk pulling a hamstring muscle from attempting the exercise too quickly.  Three sets of five reps should be good for starters.  Try adding using weights once your body adjusts to the resistance of your body weight.

Knee bends are another excellent way to strengthen your knee muscles.  If you don’t have access to an exercise or machine, you can also do them at home with just a chair and some ankle weights.  You need the weights because the resistance of your own body weight really isn’t enough to build up your knee muscles.  So wearing the ankle weights sit so that your feet are directly on the floor in front of you.  From there lift one leg until it sticks straight out in front of you, hold for a few seconds, then put your leg back down.  Try doing ten of those with each leg for starters.  Then increase your repetitions as your knees get stronger.

Those exercises are a great way to get you started, and as long as you keep at it your knees will get much healthier and stronger.  Remember to exercise consistently, and frequently to maintain your health and develop your fitness.
